weak processor vs hard drive failing

had my computer come over to help with some other issues - ie not performing windows updates etc. Noticing that the unit is freezing up more frequently. Is there a test to see if that hard drive is failing vs a weak processor. HP unit with 1.35 tb available, processor is a AMD II x4 645 3.10 ghz.
The guy is local in Gonzales and one of his techs comes to my house or looks at my comuter via team viewer.
TIA

What brand hard drive? If it's a Seagate, download Seatools for DOS, create a bootable disc, and run the Long Test. If it's not a Seagate, it won't let you run the test. Great tool for Seagate drives and much better than chkdsk.

I am running a similar HP computer and haven't encountered any of the problems you have. Try these 2 free and portable utilities to check your HD and repair Windows Updates.
For the Hd use https://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/HDD-Tools/Portable-HDDExpert.shtml
For windows update use, https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2044
Also is your system clean of Malware and is it defragged? Another possibility is bit rot. You may try a fresh reinstall of the OS.
