As I said in the MG thread, there's a reason the Starks are the only family that's been around for 8000 years, and was never conquered by the Andals. People hate on Ned for being honorable, but no other family inspires that kind of loyalty. It's based on their honor. It might get them killed sometimes, but they survive.

The Starks are also pretty friendly on their economic policy while running the north. They allow the other forts make their money while they just take what is needed to run the north. It has allowed for some mismagment of funds in bear islands but also extreme wealth in other forts
