As a major garage/estate sale customer, I do not negotiate at all unless I am buying bulk (how much for everything?). I am treasure hunting, so most of the things I buy less then $10 (worth $100+).

Unlike what some have said here, Baton Rouge has some GREAT garage sales, just know where to go. I stick to old, wealthy neighborhoods (Garden District, University Acres, Old Goodwood, Webb park area, etc).

These people buy nice things and sell them at a garage sale to get rid of them, not trying to make money.

There are two apps for iPhone, one is the app for the Advocate and another is "Garage Sale Finder". The latter one searches all ads on craigslist and other places besides the Advocate.

I usually bring $100, but have run to the ATM to get a few hundred when I have come across a large lot.

This is my diamond in the rough find today. I paid $5, it is worth about $150.
