Once you get to book 3-4, it's phenomenal. He is a great story teller, and you'll be surprised by where he takes this series. Don't get me wrong, the first couple of books are good read, they just aren't anywhere near the greatness that the series becomes.
His (Jim Butcher) Codex Alera series is legit and more fantasy based if that is what you are looking for.
