I was looking for something in a 38 or 357 to play with so to speak.

If youre looking for something to play with, as in have fun shooting, then youre not looking for any snub nose or small frame. You want a med/large frame at least 3" revolver if youre going to have fun shooting any .357 Mag loads. IMHO, there's only two makers of revolvers - Ruger/S&W. Colt made amazing guns but those are all heirloom now and Magnum Research/Dan Wesson make amazing revolvers as well, but that's 3x your price range so youre limited to Ruger/S&W and Taurus if dont want a premium piece. It's hard to find that in your price range. GP100 or Blackhawk is what I would go with if you could find one. An SP101 would be serviceable if you get a 4.20" barrel which weighs in at 30 oz. The Taurus 608 .357 Mag would be in your price range

I dont get why all of you are recommending C.C.W. revolvers when the purpose of this gun will be a casual shooter/fun gun. CC .357 mag revolvers absolutely suck to shoot. Yeller, if the intention is to look forward to shooting this pistol and to have fun, then dont buy a 637 S&W. That gun weighs 15 oz.
