Yamaha 150 vmax

I'm having trouble with my motor not wanting to idle correctly after making a decent run across the lake. Does my throttle cable need adjusting? I can kill it quickly and fire it back up and it revs up to about 5k... can anyone give me some advice?

I didn't say it was locked up like a Mercury.

Wifes uncle has had 4 Yamahas on his Skeeter over a 7 year period and all replaced under warranty. The second one he had locked up when the dealer that replaced it took it on a test run in the red river.

Yeah there are no stories out there like that about Mercury motors.
But back to topic.
You are saying it over revs at start-up, but only after its ran a while?

Yes pretty much... it doesn't idle rough or miss while running.

I wish I could help, but this one is new to me.
Sounds like it could be a stuck linkage or cable and not an engine problem.
My suggestion is to see if you can replicate the issue in your driveway or backed down the ramp, still on the trailer. Take the cowling off the motor and have someone work the throttle until the issues pops up. Keep your eyes on all the cables and linkage, could be sticking or could be some type of obstruction.
This could be a safety issue if your throttle is sticking so you may want to consider bringing it in.

Do you have a hot foot?

Yea I'm thinking it's a cable issue. I guess I should have said I do have a hot foot.

I have a 225 vmax. I know my motor runs on 4 cylinders when idling and goes to 6 when you get going. I have heard similar problems like what you are saying when the switch that regulates this feature goes bad

My cousin had pretty much the exact same thing happen on his 225 4 strokes. You'd crank the engines and they'd rev up really quickly until you killed it. I don't remember what the issue was, but it took him a little while to get a mechanic who figured it out. It screwed up 2 snapper trips though when we thought the issue was fixed. Nothing like pounding beers idling back to the camp at 7:00 am cuz you know your day of fishing is already shot .

Hopefully just an adjustment.

Checked to see what the problem ended up being. It was sticky butterfly valve and clogged fuel injectors from bad fuel. Got it cleaned up and it worked. I think his issues with not getting it fixed was that he had both issues. they fixed the valves, but overlooked the injectors.

You would think with bad gas it would run bad though. I hope it's a throttle cable issue.

It did run bad after they fixed the butterfly valve. Was missing cylinders, loping bad.
But when that valve would stick open, the RPM's were enough to blow through those issues and you couldn't notice. I mean you would turn some heads at the launch because it sounded like someone threw the hammer down on two 225 motors in about 1.5' of water . I think there was an RPM limiter that would shut the engines down shortly after he'd crank them. Wasn't a lot of time to really hear what was going on.

Try posting your questions on Bass Boat Central under the Yamaha forum.
FYI...sounds like a stuck throttle cable to me.

Yea I believe that's my next step. I don't have a dependable shop close to my house plus I work out of town during the week. Trying to solve this issue quickly.
