Probably not. I haven't researched this one specifically but one criteria ATF requires to approve a semi-auto version of a MG is that design changes preventing full auto conversion are made. The AR is far and away the simpler of the ones out there and that requires drilling the receiver which is beyond many folks skill set.

I am guessing they converted this to a closed bolt which means it is a whole different gun, despite looks, than the original MG.

Probably not? Dealers and manufactures do this everyday. Sure, a drill press and a AR lower is the easiest, but all are capable of being converted. Comical to say any different.
