Not if you stay relatively clean, like with classic Fender tone. The crunchier you go, the more likely you're going to have to go louder, anyway, for it to sound right (IMHO).
(ETA: And I think you need to budget $800 to a grand for a decent, new tube amp. Plus, they aren't maintenance free and you have to be more careful to move them around to gig.)
