It seems to me that you see a lot of people who "put God first" or "live their life for God". If you are one of these people, have you explored any other religions? I would imagine that 95% of people have not extensively researched or explored any other religion outside of the one they follow. I would imagine most also just stuck with whatever they grew up with from their parents. That's fine and all, but if religion is the most important aspect of your life- wouldn't you want to read the word of all different kinds of religions? Is this not a disturbing thought to most people? How can you devote your life to a religion or make it your top priority in life, when you haven't even given thought to anything other than what you have learned about since birth? For the record, I'm not for or against religion. It has it's good and it's bad just like anything else. I've just always found that aspect fascinating. If you devote your life to your family, chances are you didn't stop your search for a wife after your first girlfriend. Just curious as to this thought process.

I'm in a religion whose 1st Commandment is thou shalt not buy Varsity Letters for Hoops unless you earned them

Kidding. I'm fascinated by the religious ideas espoused by the inhabitants of the sub-continent of India. I watched a doco the other day by a British Actor whose friend from University spent every off-season from school in India with wisemen in an Ashram. He devoted so fully to it he was recognized as one of the few non ethnic Holy Men in his sect and in India as a whole. Dude would leave to come back home after every offseason. He met his wife in the ashram (She was British) and they had a completely normal life in Britain. Multiple kids, cereal for Breakfast, the whole 9. The wife was full bore for awhile but drifted away and stayed in GB with the kids each offseason while he set off for the ashram and a life of concentrating and contemplation.

The doco sent them to the Ganges for the washing in the water religious SuperBowl they do every 3 years.

So amazingly divergent from what we do here in the West with organized religion, and then again, very much rigidly dogmatic. But seeing the spectacle of that many people-unwashed and squalid though a majority of them may be-in one place at one time is absolutely awe-inspiring.

I read a lot about spirituality, and a lot of eastern mystical stuff but never found anything to hang my hat on.

Religion is philosophy. Some are more metaphysical than others, some are more rigid.
