Gotta admit there is a lot of compelling argument to Quid's post if his facts are right.
AND, if he's right, there's good reason to get on board the Fire Alleva train.
Chavis was a solid coach, on balance, and he appears to be driven to a division rival over an argument over one year job security.
At 60 yrs old or so, Chavis' concern to have three years to finish his career (not two) was clearly a fair concern and it could have been handled without damage to the program.
Instead, it indeed appears to have become a "respect" issue and was handled WITH damage to the program.
Who wants to see Alleva in that kind of position of authority again?
This is NOT to say Chavis handled it properly, especially as the bowl game approached. He did NOT, and his reputation will forever be affected by that.

Miles Wanted to Keep Chavis but wanted a HUNH defense

"Defensive coordinator John Chavis left LSU in a huff after the 2014 season because of year-long contract disagreements with athletic director Joe Alleva. It had nothing to do with LSU head coach Les Miles, who tried to convince Chavis to stay until the very end in the hours after the Tigers lost to Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30."

Chavis talks about how difficult it was to leave LSU: his love for his players and Miles
Leaving LSU wasn’t an easy decision, and Chavis acknowledged that difficulty considering the relationships built in his time in Baton Rouge.

“The emotions are with those kids,” Chavis said of the Tigers. “I love those kids. But there came a time when you have to make a decision and you have do what's best for you. And I've coached this game for 38 years or so and to be quite honest with you, I haven't always made decisions solely based on what was best for me. But this was a great opportunity that I couldn't turn down. It's a great situation, certainly it's one where I hope I can finish my career. If I get eight or 10 good years here, if I can go that long, it would be great.”

Chavis also had positive things to say about LSU coach Les Miles.

“Listen, I love Coach Miles too,” Chavis said. “He was a great guy to work for. We have a great relationship and it'll always be that kind of relationship. But the toughest thing was leaving those kids. The good thing is, I have a great group of young men [at Texas A&M]. And we're learning to love and care about each other. We're learning to trust each other. That's how it has to happen. They've got to trust me. I've got to trust them. And that happens over time and we're learning that now and Texas A&M feels like home.”

Without getting into any discussion on the quality of Chavis' defenses (as it is really irrelevant to the "Miles Clause" in the contract) I don't think Alleva screwed up by not guaranteeing Chavis a position if and when Miles leaves the program. It is not a given that an incoming coach would want Chavis on his staff, and if you want to attract a top coach in this situation (which I do) then he needs to have control over his staff when he comes in.

Imagine the following scenario

- Alleva guarantees Chavis the next 3 years with a buyout equal to his salary to keep Chavis from A&M around Thanksgiving
- Miles goes to Michigan instead of Harbaugh at the end of the season
- LSU gets to the final stages of negotiating a deal with Harbaugh that fall apart because he doesn't want Chavis on his staff - or he resents that decision being made for him prior to him being contacted - a week or two before NSD

The next coach doesn't have to be Harbaugh, I just chose that name because he was the hot coach for the this cycle. As shortsighted as Alleva is being accused of acting, his actions may be based on the fact that he doesn't want to restrict his candidates to replace Miles to only those who are willing to accept Miles' staff as part of the deal.
