Lost audiobooks on iphone

I bought several audiobooks last summer from iTunes which were somewhat pricey. I replaced my iPhone in the fall with a new one and backed the phone on iCloud but now I can't find any of the audiobooks.
Google search seems to suggest they don't get backed up on iCloud (wtf?) and attempting to download them will recharge me. I didn't keep my receipts.
Any thoughts on my options/chances to recover these books?

Call Apple tech support. They will help you get them back.

That's pretty shitty. I suggest using Audible in the future. If you buy the kindle version of a book from Amazon, many times you can get the audiobook from Audible for $3-4 more. You can download (and redownload) at any time, forever. They also have a cool feature on many of their books called Whispersync where the kindle version and audible version will stay in sync with each other.

you can also adjust the speed of the narrator.
