Tool and Metallica can occasionally remake other legendary rock bands' music and actually improve upon the original song, but no band has yet been able to remake a Tool or Metallica song and make it better.

Case in point: The Tool remake of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter.

Tool improved No Quarter. Their version is FAR better than the original, but Zeppelin receives all credit for being brilliant enough to create the original.

What does this say about bands like Tool and Metallica?

just like the disco biscuits, there's certain bands material that just don't sound right when covered by someone else.

True about Metallica, not true about Tool. What other covers does Tool play? Metallica has a bunch of great ones.

No Quarter by Zep is the best version. Tool didn't improve on this classic track.

I like Tool, but … their version of NQ is simply bad.

Whoa....pump the brakes. Its a phenomenal cover...I would give you slightly better since you're obviously a young dude/Tool fan...but FAR better? You're on crack.

It's not FAR better. I love both versions. But I do give Tool credit for re-arranging it so that it's just a straight copy. They did a great job making it sound like Tool.

For the last 25+ years, Metallica has been a much better cover band than an originals one. They really knock them out the park, like they did with Mercyful Fate and Budgie.

The majority of covers that Metallica has recorded are pretty kickass. But i'm going to forget that I ever heard their version of the Ramone's "53rd and 3rd."

Doesn't change the fact that covers like Loverman and Sabbra Cadabra are off the charts good.

I didn't find Tool's cover of No Quarter all that impressive, nor did I find it very creative. Somewhat related, but A Perfect Circle's covers album had much more "creative" covers of songs, but overall the album was just kind of meh. That's probably because the only reason they did the album was to get out of their contract.

Metallica's early metal and rock covers vary in terms of quality. Some are good and some are downright terrible (e.g. "Whisky in the Jar"). James isn't a very melodic singer and therefore is limited in terms of his vocal capabilities. Also, I find the guitar work on such covers is too highly distorted and not clean enough for you to truly appreciate the original writing.

However, they always managed to improve any hardcore or NWOBHM song they chose to cover because A. They possessed better musicianship and B. They had access to better production.

You can make the same argument about every British invasion band to ever cover a black artist.

There are very few cases in which any song has ever been improved via cover. Usually, the most successful covers are those which take the original material and alter it entirely (e.g. tempo, ambiance, genre, etc.).

Two great examples of such stylistic alterations are Cash's cover of "Hurt" and Tori Amos' cover of "Raining Blood". Neither cover sounds at all like the original, but does that make it better necessarily?
