Nope. TOPS to LSU versus the same type of offer made from a place like Harvard, Yale or Stanford makes me laugh. Why wouldn't a person take that? Insecurities is the only answer. If you are able to compete with the best, why not take the chance?
For real. If you were able to attend any of those schools and chose LSU you are obviously are retarded anyways so LSU was probably the better choice.

I'm a good example. I was going to go to LSU no matter what. I had been offered scholarships at schools that, at the time had better programs than what I was going to LSU for, and that I was willing to pay for, just to go to LSU. Call me stupid, but it's one of the best things I've ever done. No regrets. And BTW, I've been competing with the best, successfully, for about 35 years since.

And that's not a very modern version of the food old boy's network. That's always been the same old definition of the good old boys network

He is one of many on the OT that turned down admission into some of the best schools in the world to go to LSU.

Well ya because you are a pilot. If you wanted to be in law, politics, finance or a field like that you would have a ton of regrets.

The old networks were based on who you grew up with, who your parents were, etc. Today, it's more about where you go to school and what profession you are in.

maybe so, but I can point to a hell of a lot of success stories in those fields that stayed at home

ETA: not to you, the field of medicine

If it is you vs. an Ivy Leaguer, all else equal, the Ivy Leaguer gets the job and you don't. I didn't read this entire thread, and I'm sure there is a bunch of anecdotal evidence about how prestigious degrees don't matter. But an Ivy League degree opens doors in ways that not just any degree does. You can throw a handful of other schools in that category, including Stanford, MIT, and Cal Tech.

Sure but you aren't going to reach the top of your fields unless you go there. Where have all of the recent Presidents gone? Where did all of the biggest tech guys go? Where did all of the biggest hedge fund managers go? Yale, Harvard, Stanford and to a lesser degree these days Princeton.

I enrolled in a one year grad program at UPenn in 2013, it was the biggest shite show (incompetent staff) I've ever come across, withdrew before I owed any tutition. I decided on a state school for grad school. I have a Master's with no debt thanks to state schools (LSU Illinois State), but I still ache inside a bit that no casual acquaintance will ever think I'm intelligent because I didn't graduate with an Ivy League degree.
I also had a shot at a top 10 law school and decided against it. It also hurts a bit, but I had to make the best decision for me. I couldn't deal with the stress and pressure associated with all of that debt.

credentials get you in the door, after that, all potential nepotism, connections aside, it's up to you to perform

GF went to grad school at Columbia, and worked there for a while afterward. She was miserable, academia at that level is cutthroat to an extent that has to be experienced to be believed. But she stuck it out and has that credential, which takes you a long, long way.

as I posted earlier, it's all on the individual, my daughter went to an Ivy league school, graduated magna cum loud, works for a company that has the highest net worth in the world at what they do, makes about $40k/yr., at her age, 32 yrs. ago with my piddly assed LSU degree I was making $129k/yr. Where's the value unless you grab the bull by the horns?

Notice how nobody who went to harvard, Yale, or princeton ever admits it on here?
