....when you are having a conversation with them then are leaving to go somewhere. Whether it's out of town, or maybe somewhere further away than down the street, or whatever. I've heard "Be Safe" at the end of three different conversations this morning and the other party was going nowhere dangerous. In fact, one was just going home.....
Because despite the perpetual spreading of the myth that "things are worse now", many things were legit much more dangerous back in the day. Driving was much more dangerous. Medical care was worse. The odds of never seeing the person you had just seen ever again were palpably higher than they are now.
Them (us) saying it is just a holdover from a less genteel time.
