When I repainted the cabinets, you nearly needed sunglasses with all the lighting on at once.

I have NINE recessed can lights with ultra-daylight bright LEDs. White marble countertops, double wide window over the sink and huge double windows in the adjacent dining area. It's all about the light, to me.

+1 on smooth tile (or continuous stone, but that's pricey) backsplashes.

All white is a bit cold, I like some natural wood tones to warm up the cool colors. BUT NO BEIGES OR BROWNS. Gah.

It's not cold with all the red and I have a lot of bright colored local art in my kitchen. It's a fun room for me.

I have 6 windows in the kitchen. Double windows over the sink. A regular sized single window and two wide long windows.

I have a tile backsplash, black and white, smooth tiles with black grout. Have had no problem cleaning splashes of tomato gravies.

My colors are not for everyone. I think folks should put in the colors they like best. A kitchen is very personal, in my opinion, if you like to cook and spend a lot of time in that room. If you prefer browns and beiges, go for it.

I'm putting in a new bathroom and a girl from high school sent over tiles for me to look at. Everything she suggested was beige. Beige tones of tiles, paint. It was blah to me, but for someone else, it would have been fine, I'm sure. Another friend of mine said, "did she forget who you are?" and cracked up laughing. This girl will not like the result. The shower is black and white smooth tiles. The floor is patchwork cement tiles with all kinds of color and designs and the walls are going to be a sort of blue picked up from some of the tiles. Gonna be fun when it's done, but it's not for everyone by any means, but everyone doesn't live in my house and those who do must adhere.

I love these patchwork tiles.
