He may have been empty, or not even hauling a trailer. At 65-70mph it's not hard to work up a little extra speed if you're not hauling a load (especially when moving downhill, which I think they were when he seemed to speed up).

1. He sure didn't seem to have any problem accelerating to get so close to the car in front of him that a VW couldn't fit between them
2. Why would a truck driver get within 10 feet of another car at ~70 mph then?
