I usually adhere to this. But there's always an a-hole right behind you trying to merge as well who merges onto the interstate and immediately speeds up and cuts you off.

That is almost EXACTLY what happened to me on 294 in chicago last winter. Only difference being that I was in my lane passing a truck who came into my lane and spun me in front of him so that I was pushed down the expressway. Trust me when I say it's more than a little scary to suddenly look out your driver's side window and see a semi grill six inches away.

This is one of my pet peeves. They will cross the double solid white line and cut you off. I think I read somewhere that this isn't illegal, just discouraged. Why not just make it illegal?
