Make two stacks of three 35 or 45 lbs plates under the bar in the smith machine. Position to them where your heals touch the ground on the negative portion of the raise. Tremendous range of motion.
It's better if your gym has the plates with the polyurethane coating. They don't slide. The metal plates will slide a bit, but not enough to put you at serious risk.
