I work in real estate and a lot of these people have zero idea what they are talking about. Just because your sister in law sucked at it doesn't mean the OP will.
I started off at a Keller Williams office in Louisiana. Jumped into commercial as soon as they launched their new division. After 3 years, I got a job with a company in Texas that brokers investment type properties (multifamily, shopping centers, industrial space). If you're willing to work hard, it's a pretty good gig. I'm 28 and make six figures even in bad years.
