LSU Basketball Week in Review WE 3/1/15
Posted on 3/2/15 at 7:55 am
Posted on 3/2/15 at 7:55 am
Record last week: (2-0)
LSU 84, Auburn 61
LSU 73, Ole Miss 63
Week Summary: It's finally here; March Madness! LSU finished up February with two key victories. First LSU went to Auburn and absolutely dominated a lesser opponent that they lost to earlier this season. Then LSU completed the season sweep of Ole Miss and took possession of 4th in the SEC. LSU did it with great defense as their defensive efficiency has moved all the way up to 12th in the country. Tim Quarterman completed LSU's first triple double since 1992 (Shaq) against Ole Miss; 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Streak: Win 3
Top performer: Jarell Martin has really played impressive basketball lately. He added two more double doubles to his total and scored 43 with 24 rebounds on the week. He shot 64% from two point range and only turned the ball over 2 times.
Cause for Concern: Jordan Mickey has struggled way more than LSU can afford moving forward. While he scored double figures in each game, it took a 5 of 14 shooting performance to do it in the Ole Miss game. Couple that with only having 4 rebounds in each of the last two games and there is a trend that has to turn around for LSU to achieve their season goals.
Top Team Stat of Week: LSU's assist to turnover ratio this week was 39:21. After going 22:11 against Auburn on the road, LSU impressively went 17:10 against Ole Miss in two of LSU's cleaner games of the year.
Rankings and Standings:
CBS RPI 45 (55LW)
ESPN RPI 45 (53LW)
BPI 32 (38LW)
KenPom 28 (32LW)
Breaking the trend: After having 0 games with less than 6 rebounds all season, Jordan Mickey has had only 4 rebounds in 3 of the last 4 games. Jarell Martin has picked up the slack in the rebound department, but LSU needs Mickey to get back to the boards. He now averages 9.9 per game after being well above 10 RPG for most of the year.
Best single game: Tim Quarterman did what only two LSU players in history have ever done on Saturday. His triple double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists was the first triple double since Shaq in 1992. The only other player in LSU history to complete this feat with assists, rebounds, and points was Pistol Pete who did it one time in his career. Quarterman also added 2 blocks, a steal, and only 1 turnover and made 8 of 9 free throws.
LSU Opponent who made noise: UAB has a 12-4 record in Conference USA and won two games this week at home versus Marshall and Middle Tennessee. They are currently 2 games behind Louisiana Tech and in second place in the conference.
Interesting Stat of the Week: Ole Miss has the 19th most efficient offense in the country averaging 1.13 points per possession this year, but LSU's stifling defense held the Rebels to only 0.88 points per possession catapulting LSU's defensive efficiency to a season's best 12th allowing only 0.921 points per possession. The average this year is 1.02 PPP.
LSU Scorers this week:
Jarell Martin 43
Keith Hornsby 29
Tim Quarterman 26
Jordan Mickey 25
Jalyn Patterson 25
Josh Gray 7
Darcy Malone 2
LSU Rebounders this week:
Jarell Martin 24
Tim Quarterman 13
Jordan Mickey 8
Keith Hornsby 8
Jalyn Patterson 7
Josh Gray 3
Darcy Malone 2
Brian Bridgewater 1
Aaron Epps 1
LSU Assists/TO this week:
Tim Quarterman 16:4
Jalyn Patterson 12:2
Josh Gray 7:2
Keith Hornsby 2:1
Jarell Martin 1:2
Jordan Mickey 1:6
Brian Eddlestone 0:1
Darcy Malone 0:3
SEC Standings:
Bracketology: LSU made giant leaps this week into making their case for an NCAA Tournament bid, and this weeks updated bracketologies prove that. LSU picked up some projections as low as 6 seeds and now average the first 10 seed and are included in 69 of the 75 updated brackets. LSU has to feel confident that 1 more win gets them in the field.
Most Dominant SEC Win of the Week: Kentucky came to play when Arkansas came to town. The 1 vs 2 SEC matchup ended up being a bust as the Cats put away Arkansas 84-67. Arkansas never led and were down by as much as 31 before UK took the foot off the gas late.
Biggest SEC Upset of the Week: No big time upsets stick out, but Ole Miss' loss at home to Georgia has to be the surprise of the week. Ole Miss seemed to have an NCAA bid locked up and a top 4 SEC seed with a 10-4 record before letting UGA come into the Tad Pad and upset the Rebels. Now, Ole Miss sits in 6th place in the SEC and are squarely on the bubble.
This week in LSU Basketball:
Home vs Tennessee Wednesday, Mar 4th - 6PM SECN
Away vs Arkansas Saturday, Mar 7th - 1PM ESPN

Excellent write up as usual. Stat that sticks out:
Tim Quarterman 16:4
Jalyn Patterson 12:2
And, of course the triple double by Quarterman. This team is coming together nicely. Avoid a let down vs Tenn, and we dancin' y'all!

Huge week last week, puts us so close to dancing. Getting the season sweep against Tennessee would probably be enough to get us in, but I'd LOVE to add a road win at Arky for good measure.

This is just crazy to think about...
If LSU would have won one of their bad three losses, the game vs Arkansas this weekend (Barring loss to Tennessee) would be a battle for the 2 seed in the SEC tournament. Winning just 1 of those losses would put us in great position.

Great read. Would be great to close out the regular season with two solid wins.
Really hope Mickey finds his groove again because he really has looked off. Really impressed with the progression of this team this season.

Wish the Tennessee game was on Tuesday, can't make it on Wednesday. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going.

Really enjoy these summaries. Keep them up. I cringe every time when I see that 3 of our SEC losses came from the 3 worst teams in the standings. We are 24-5 if we just took care of business and played to our capabilities each game. Regardless, like their chances these last 2 games and going into tourney play.
Also agree with your concerns about Mickey. He has been trying to force things at times and becomes very TO prone for a BIg.

Anybody figured out if we beat UT wednesday and assuming those in front of use win, what would be the final Saturday scenario in regards to SECt seeding?
I assume we could be anywhere from 2nd to 6th
I'm sure its convoluted but I know someone has done the math

We hold the tie breakers over Ole Miss and UGA (all 3 at 10-6 currently). UGA still plays UK and Ole Miss has games at Bama and home vs Vandy.
At this point 4th seed is most likely given Ole Miss loses one of their two games or LSU can beat Arkansas.
I think Texas A&M holds onto the 3 seed. The Aggies would have to lose both @Florida and home vs Alabama.
Arkansas would have to lose at South Carolina and at home vs LSU for us to pass them.

definitely a refreshing feeling to say it and mean it. We know he can recruit so to see coaching get better is awesome.

Was Shaq's triple double with assists or blocks?

Yikes.
Obviously needs to improve, but it was a good week for the Tigers overall.

Great read. Look forward to these each week; gives me something to do in my morning class
Assuming Mickey turns it around, I think we win out this week with a barn-burner at Arkansas. Portis didn't impress me much against UK. Even if it was UK, M&M stood toe-to-toe with those guys.

Shaq had 26 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks in a first-round NCAA tournament victory over BYU.

nice summary
I'd almost be OK with the 5 seed. We'd get a bottom feeder team. It would give us a chance to log a win and acclimate to the depth perception issues that can rear its head when playing in a large arena.
Given the probable scenario we'd have a buy into the quarterfinals to most like play ole miss again. Its hard to beat a team 3 times. Moody has been held in check in both of our games. You gotta think that midget is due to go off..............
The 2 or 3 seed is pure gold. I wish they wouldnt have botched the damn Mizz game

As the season has progressed, I think the team has played with more intensity and focus. If a team is lacking in those two areas it can come across as poor coaching. I attribute this to Quarterman as I think the other players feed off his energy.

Barring a huge collapse in their final two games, A&M is going to finish ahead of LSU. They would have to lose their final two (along with LSU winning their final two) in order to slip behind LSU. For LSU the 3 seed is a remote possibility with the 4 seed being a bit more likely (but in no way a given)
To get the 3 seed LSU has to win their final two (UT, @Ark) while Ark has to lose thier final two (@USC, LSU)
If both Ole Miss (@ Bama) and UGA (UK) lose this week, and LSU beats UT, LSU clinches at least the 4th seed.
Also, LSU holds the tie breakers between them and UGA, and Ole Miss.
The most realistic way LSU slips to the 5th seed is to go 1-1 this week, while Ole Miss finishes 2-0. Same with UGA, but it is much more likely that OM goes 2-0 than UGA

After trading wins and losses through the first 12 SEC games, and against mostly the bottom half of the SEC, it's a pleasant surprise to see the Tigers play with some consistency over the last two weeks.

This happened during the second half of the SEC season last year as well. Either a)teams have adjusted to LSU and had schemed him out, or b) he hits a wall after 24 games or so.
I agree with you that we definitely need him playing well if we are going to have more than a cup of coffee in the postseason.
