I know nothing of these people but if she was being abused then there's a good chance she will never be charged. It has nothing to do with political connections.
I know of a woman who is as white trash as can be with no connections at all. Her husband abused her for years and she shot him in the back while he was asleep after an argument one night. She's never been charged and this was over 10 years ago.
If the woman from the OP is charged, then chances are she will serve no time and instead plead insanity because of the abuse she was under. That will be a cake walk for her attorney if there really was a history of abuse already reported to the police.

Nobody has to take a beating from someone else, especially when there was a history of abuse.

This. She doesn't really even need a crazy plea--it's very believable that he came at her and it was self-defense.

I think battered wife syndrome should be classified under workplace violence. Only a housewife who can't or won't work would stay with an abuser. If you can't or won't work then I consider you a housewife. Your employer husband beat you so you killed him should be workplace violence.
