Charlotte > Nola > Birmingham, and I live in Birmingham. Nola and Charlotte are both great cities it really just depends on what you want. Charlotte is more of a big city feel and is becoming the major city on the east coast (Not in the northeast).
ETA: The perk of Birmingham is the cost of living is great. I bought a condo downtown with a very average salary at the age of 22. You aren't doing that in Charlotte or Nola. Rents in Birmingham outside of Mountain Brook and downtown are below $1,000 for 1BR

I like Charlotte for its proximity to other things, but I actually think N.O. and Birmingham both have more of a "city feel."
Charlotte is sort of a big sprawling suburb.
N.O. and Birmingham each have cool older actual urban feeling neighborhoods.
Probably has to do with Charlotte's main growth coming in the last 30-40 years, where the other two grew up much earlier.
Charlotte is certainly the bigger modern city, but I really think it lacks what I consider an urban "feel."
