2 of my buddies went the non-military route and got Aviation degrees. Once went to LA Tech and the other NLU. They both flew private shite out of Monroe and they were basically in poverty until they both got on with Continental Express back in the day. One now flies big jets for Southwest and other quit and sells insurance in the Mecca.
