Just because we can't imagine a reasonable alternative doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The universe is so vast, I'd almost be amazed if there wasn't some other form of life somewhere out there. All of this. Our definition of "life" is pathetically narrow (although understandable given the makeup of our species' faculties), especially when held up to the obvious pantheon of celestial possibilities.
