There was some kind of program in which you plant it in trees for so many years. Not sure the specs or money involved but a friend of mine did that with some of his land.

I think you mean the Crop Reduction program. You can plant pecans and other native hardwoods. I believe the maximum amount of the time you can be in the program is 15 years. There is a lot of paperwork involved and there is upfront work that has to be done to the land to qualify. It does provide steady income while the trees are growing though.
