Like Massive said- a bit of both. Plus jam band fans have always had heavy internet presence because there is so much to discuss over the changing setlists.

I was, literally, setting up tape trades through the mail off of rec.music.gdead and rec.music.phish back in the day... so I'm pretty familiar with the online jamband scene. Was also big into the #phish IRC channel for a while.

The grateful dead's connection to John Perry Barlow is really interesting as that guy is way more famous as an authority on internet privacy and online communities than as a cowriter with Bob Weir.

Anyway, even though there's a heavy online community of jamband fans, I've never seen a music message board with so many. I've been on a huge Chiefs message board for years and there were like 2 other jamband fans on that board.

The southern/jazzfest/NO connection makes some sense as well.
