I don't think skilled blue collar labor is looked down upon at all. Plumbers, Electricians and HVAC guys are usually some of the most well off people in any given city.

This, but unskilled blue collar jobs are looked down upon. Everyone assumes they were not smart enough or didn't go to college.

Many are also fairly intelligent. Mechanics, etc. It takes a lot of problem solving ability to do that kind of work.
