Facebook took off because of its exclusivity and uncluttered feel, as shown in the movie and as everyone here mentioned. It wasn't full of bullshite, at least when it started.

It's ironic that it is now following the same path MySpace took that allowed Facebook to beat MySpace out originally. It's completely thrown its ideals of exclusivity and uncluttered/ad-free out the window. I can't post curse words or pictures of me drinking anymore because my damn grandma and 5 year old cousins are friend requesting me. And there's a mile of bullshite on my news feed I have to trudge through before I see anything from friends I actually care about. Add on top of that the fact that now employers will look you up before you interview and you now have to be a choir boy so God forbid they don't see a pic of you holding a beer.

But Facebook took a stranglehold on the industry and there's no real comparable substitute for it.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but MySpace was incredibly slow once it took off. If you read any of the books written about FaceBook, they will typically mention how MySpace could not keep up with its early growth and its network became overloaded.

good God the 45-65 demo has ruined Facebook for me. You can't post a witty comment on your feed without them commenting something like "huh? I don't get it?"

THIS!!! My mother will never let me have a good status or banter with my friends on Facebook without chiming in and being the biggest buzz kill. Anytime I post a funny picture I'll be lucky to have one or two friends comment on it before ole mom swoops in with the classic "LOL you used to do that when you were little, too!!! Love you!!!" Game over. It's like the modern day version of leaving lame notes in your lunch bag

Once older people find social media, game over. It's dead.

Facebook just made itself a conglomerate and basically made itself like the yellowpages of the internet before that happened. So a ton of people like me have a Facebook but use it strictly as an information source. It also quickly buys up any rising social media to keep it's competition down

MySpace didnt have farmville

This is the truth. I had both Myspace and Facebook but Myspace was the bigger of the two. Then Farmville came along and other games started popping up and people were using Facebook to play the games. Then they just kinda stayed on Facebook as more and more of their friends joined.
