That actually sounds like a great fitness initiative for any company.
It's also the annoying bureaucratic type of shite meant for dumb people that annoys employees in a professional setting. We don't do this but my GF's firm does. They have to pick team names and do team activities, everyone but the named partnership hates it because they all work 70 hours a week already.

Getting free fitness bands is annoying?

Sounds like there are bigger issues at hand.
TIL only dumb people want to have fun and partake in team building exercises at work.

Partners love it because if enough people participate, health insurance premiums are lower overall for a company, or at least that is how it is with my employer's plan. They mentioned in our last staff meeting that they may explore penalizing employees (i.e. raise employee premiums) if enough people do not participate in 2015.
