not fan base perception, I think the total difference in players at A&M who still seem to love him is a bit odd.

Ehh, you can see it in the quote from Kentucky player in the story.

Josh Harrellson - "He was just an old school, hard coach. He wanted to tear players down and rebuild them into what he thought a good basketball player was. But the only problem was the guys you normally get at Kentucky didn't need that kind of treatment. We knew how to play basketball. Yes, we needed to develop as players, but he didn't need to rebuild us from the ground up."

A&M players were willing to buy in.

Kentucky players weren't.

One could make the argument that at Kentucky he ran into the buzzsaw of dudes who had been told how great they were their whole lives and didn't care to get worked hard Bear Bryant style while at A&M he mostly had guys that weren't that highly touted and knew they had to work their asses off to succeed.
