Well, you SAID no rules, so here's my list....I always visit grocery/food stores when I travel.
1. Mercato Centrale in Florence, Italy: technically, no, it's not a supermarket. It is an indoor market with various stalls (butcher, produce, seafood, etc). Everything is beautifully displayed, but the best part is the stall Nerbone, which serves food to mostly market workers & locals. Ribollita, beef sandwiches that are dipped in the cooking liquid right before serving, etc. Like dis:
2. Ferry Building Farmer's Market. Yes, another one that's technically not a supermarket, but the farmer's market to end all markets. A ludicrously beautiful display of California bounty, right on SF Bay.
3. Tie between my two favorites in Rome: Volpetti and Castroni.
