My dog is such a vagina. I know there will be a day when I have to choke a dog out to protect us both. It's statistics.

Carry a walking stick. Putting your hands near a dogs neck/mouth in a fight is a great way to get bitten. Badly.
And never go to the ground with one.
If you find yourself breaking up a dog fight, pull the hind legs of the aggressor and/or make a shite ton of noise and act like a crazy person.
Never reach in the middle, you will get bitten.
