Ice for lower back pain, heat only brings in more inflammation.
Exercises/stretching.

Yoga, yoga, yoga after you have the pain under control. I have two herniated discs in my lower back. Per my chiro I am "cured" and it is all due to the yoga I did. Chiro told me if everyone did yoga he would be out of a job. Just saying....
