This is 100% what happened. Unit thought he was captured outside the compound while either on guard duty or something so put together several operations to locate and rescue him resulting in several deaths and several wounded. There were several indicators there was premeditation on leaving. Left all his equipment and had been having exploratory conversations with fellow soldiers on some "What If" scenarios of taking equipment and leaving.
