Question for 777Tiger and other big jet pilots

What do you think about the issues that come up from time to time where pilots lose control of a plane because they are fighting the automatic systems? I understand that it is more of an issue with pilots from Asian countries and that pilots trained in the U.S. are more attuned to actually flying the plane.
I'm assuming that with most major airlines that the pilots who are flying the jets are experts at addressing issues that can't be covered by the automatic flight systems.
My dad (career USMC pilot) says "it doesn't matter who your pilot is until things go wrong."

I think the issues with Asian pilots is that the copilots never question the authority of the pilots. I believe that is what caused the crash at SFO a few years ago.
