Definitely is.

It's definitely not automatically harder on guitar. It's a lot easier to play power chords than to make a great electronic piece or beat. Just as it's a lot easier to make a bad beat than play a complicated guitar piece. But it's all making music.
Sorry you're emotionally invested and want this to be true, but it's not. It takes time to get to a level to play a power chord correctly. It really is pretty much pushing a button. Now sampling a sound and putting it on a control device involves a little more effort, but not much more. I don't dislike all music that incorporates electronics. I actually think it can augment good music and make great soundscapes.

Exactly. The overwhelming majority of people could learn to play and write rock and traditional music way before classic beats by good producers like Kanye.

Yes. The definition of music and art in general is quite broad. Think about this quote by Frank Zappa in reference to this subject.
Pretty much anything is art simply by being presented as such. Music is auditory art(eta:that isn't simply unadorned spoken word). Whether it is good or bad is a separate matter.
quote:
The most important thing in art is The Frame. For painting: literally; for other arts: figuratively-- because, without this humble appliance, you can't know where The Art stops and The Real World begins. You have to put a 'box' around it because otherwise, what is that shite on the wall?

It's music, those who don't like it will often times find a way to discredit it. I'm not a fan, but it speaks to some people.
As long as it speaks to someone and causes or prevokes emotion or thought, it is alive.
That's what art is. A big question mark, and people's reactions are the answer.

it's all about the beats and/or the samples used
listen to pete rock, and then check out mark farina's take on his stuff
madlib and all his projects. spend a day with this guy and tell me it isn't music
the freestyles, screw and the screwed up click, wu-tang, RZA, etc. all that shite is absolutely music.
don't care for most of the stuff you'll hear on the local 'rap' station. also don't care for country but im not dull enough to say it isn't music.

I'm not THAT emotionally invested (I actually play non-electronic music). I'm just annoyed because what you're saying isn't true and it's disparaging not only a genre of music, but a medium. A medium that takes a lot talent, practice, and creativity to perfect.

I agree 100%. Just because somebody makes music with a medium other than your traditional instruments doesn't make it "not music." It's the same as comparing somebody playing a few power chords (like you said) to soembody playing something very complex on a guitar. They are both "music." Some prefer one or the other. You'd have to be pretty full of yourself to believe you are some authority on what constitutes something as "music."

It's really the difference between pushing a button that instantly produces a lasagna or making a lasagna from scratch. One could call themselves a cook, the other could not
Oh, so since you brought up cooking, I guess all modern day chef's don't really know how to 'cook" because they don't know the art of building a proper fire and cooking without gas / electricity, which takes a lot more skill than simply pressing a button or turning a knob to get the proper temperature. Give me a break... Some instruments are harder to learn than others. That doesn't mean anything when it comes to the quality of the end product. You could be a guitar virtuoso and still just write music that people consider "noise."
You are talking about the process of creating music (cooking) instead of music (food) itself, which is a completely different subject.

Sorry. Agree to disagree. I stated I think electronic music has a place and can be good.

Think about it some more. Electronic artists can be pretty similar to classical composers, except they have the ability to cut out the musicians. There really isn't any real difference between the two in terms of role. The product can be good. It can be bad, depending on the skill of the artist. But the roles are exactly the same.
Would you say that Mozart or Beethoven had less talent than the guy who was in lead chair for the violin section playing their music?
Don't take this as me saying that modern day electronic artists are as talented as Mozart and Beethoven. That's irrelevent and would be missing my point entirely. It's just that you seem to think that a person has to actually play their own music with an instrument to be as talented. At least that seems to be your argument. That's an entirely modern expectation. Things haven't been like that very long.

yes, it has melody and soul whether you like it or not.
quote:
are there any outstanding musicians/singers from this genre of "music?"
depends on your opinion.
This thread is awful.
