If I plan on putting in less than $1000 and doing the buying and trading myself, is it a waste of time/money? Are there any worthwhile "cheaper" stocks worth getting into right now? I noticed the market was down a bit.

Not necessarily. You can start to build your portfolio and build on it from here, depending on your time frame. Have a plan, and stick to it. One thing I didn't do when I first started and it bit me numerous times.

If you find any, let me know.

I'm 24 and into my new job and hate having excess cash. No student loans or real debt. Would I be better off putting the money in my 401k or investing it myself?

Rule of thumb is contribute the maximum amount that the company will match (because it is free money). Anything outside of that, you could handle on your own.

Our company matches up to 6% I believe

Only worthwhile if you're using robinhood and even then I'd stay away from day trading. $1000 isn't enough to get diversified in individual stocks on any commission brokerage

Is that serious about robinhood? Honest question. If he's looking to buy and hold, $7 commissions at scottrade aren't that much.
