He can speak English well enough if he has to. He's a very private guy and uses it as a barrier from the American media.
I read that years ago from a Mariners beat writer so I'm sure he's even better now.

He's got 4,122 professional hits between Japan and the U.S. That puts him 3rd on the all-time list and 134 hits short of Pete Rose's record of 4,256. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

Doesn't he average like 200+ a season? I know he's been down in latter years but he'll still break 3,000 in 2015.
ETA: that's given of course he stays healthy.
The real number he has now is 4,122 though.
