They probably reairred the footballs. Most NCAA refs will purposefully reair them to 14 or higher to prove a point.
ETA:
Another trick we would do, is go to stadium night before to set up. I would send a student Manager into the facility to "visit" with other student MGR etc, while he was there his job was to look for scouting reports and any handouts he could find, such as tests etc. We would take to hotel and give to usually the OL Coach.
As always you were to spit on the midfield logo after walkthrough on the road.
