re: How do you select a lawn treatment service?

Scott's Southern Turf Builder 3 - 4 times per season. That and spot treat/hand pull any weeds, and you'll be good.

I'm guessing you've never "shopped" for lawn services.
Research doesn't just mean using the internet. Ask around and see what different people are getting charged. Do you have any friends in that town?

One of my neighbors had the same idea a few years ago. He killed most of his yard.
This is my main concern....not know what the hell I'm doing.
I've seen a couple of my neighbors completely destroy their lawns. Not just a few patches, but gray all over.
Jesus....grass grows wherever the hell it wants, unless I want it there
That's pretty much what he did. His yard was nothing but a random patchwork of a few green spots with mostly dead or even bare dirt in between. His yard is still not 100% right.

I'm a TruGreen customer. I'm generally satisfied but they could be better. First of all, the guy who comes out and makes the applications is a buffoon. I quiz him on the reg and frequently catch him contradicting what he's told me previously. Also, I recently got them to admit that their applications do not have any effect on some of the sturdier lawn weeds.

And yet, you have absolutely nothing to add. If the thread bothers you so much, feel free to see your way out.

I'm lazy and you're the one who didn't bother to read the OP.
I said right off the bat that I'm pretty confident $32/application is the cheapest I can get, so Im well aware of pricing.
And I'm new to this part of town, but again, thanks for your stellar contribution.

TruGreen also operates where I live. I remember being home one day a few years ago and seeing them pull up to do a neighbors yard, not the same guy I was talking about early btw. This guy unwound a hose from his truck and literally ran through the yard spraying whatever chemical haphazardly here and there. I'd guess he actually covered less than 10% of this lawn. He took less than 5 minutes "treating" this guy's lawn before he plopped the sign down and put the guy's bill on his front door knob.

Being new in the town you should take the advice I gave earlier and talk to your neighbors who've been there long enough to know which lawn services do good work and which ones are a rip off.

Unfortunately for me, nearly everyone uses the same company that gave them the free year. Some of my neighbors closer to the front of the subdivision are finding other companies, but everyone on my street either uses the builder's company or self-service.
I probably need to get to know some of the folks closer to the front of the subdivision.

Why are you so against asking around town? Seems like a pretty simple solution.

The problem that I've ran into talking to people about lawn care is that no one (including myself) really has a clue what's going on. Most people move into a house and go with the with the guy who hangs a flyer on their door and offers the best price.
Also, it seems to me that people don't want to hold up their end by cutting and watering properly. In my old neighborhood, one guy literally blamed the lawn guy becuase half his Bermuda lawn had gone dormant in July. I've never once seen him run a sprinkler.
I don't know everything, so I'm trying to see if anyone here has any criteria on which to base good lawn care. I'm trying to avoid getting the guy that Darth described. It just seems more efficient to ask potentially dozens of people at a time rather than have one-off conversations with people who complain about their unwatered lawns.

If you put your location in the OP you might be able to get some better advice

I have a buddy that works for Scott's lawn service in BR. He's a good dude.
