it's an arbitrary figure, years ago the Navy did a study on the effects of alcohol on pilots(in the sim,) everything from sober to blotto, the best performances were by guys in the 6-8 beer/mixed drink range

Yeeaaaaah....I'm gonna need a link on that

Having a hard time believing that 6-8 drinks makes it easier to successfully place a 20 ton jet on a moving object the size of a couple football fields.

We're talking about an amount of alcohol that makes it difficult/impossible for the average dude to walk a straight line while reciting the alphabet. You might be OK driving your kids around with that guy in the road, but I'm not.

This is the only Navy test I know about involving sim flights, and alcohol, the outcome was quite different.
