It took Beckwith so long because Welter was Chavis' pet. Blatant favoritism is what kept KB off the field.
ETA: It's important to keep the long game in mind. You can't just make a hire for the sake of continuity.

he took over mid way through his sophomore year from a 5th year senior.
I wouldn't call it blatant favoritism .
