I get A plan, so it makes sense for me to buy new. I can get a 49k sport for around 38 so it doesn't pay for me to buy used. The one we're looking at has some additional options that brings it to about 42 but we could get a limited for about 38 fully loaded.

With American trucks and SUVs, you usually can buy new for less money than buying a one or two year old model because of rebates and incentives. Couple that with the fact that the OP keeps his vehicles for over 9 years, and buying used makes no sense for him.

Unless they're offering good deals. We got our '14 brand new because the low mileage one and two year old ones were selling for $35-37K. The sticker on ours was $40K (yeah, slumming it in an XLT,) but they offered several rebates that put it down to $35K. I negotiated another $1000 off and an extended warranty and felt very happy with the choice. I got a brand new Explorer and for less than a used one, and it had 12 miles on the odometer.
As for the Explorer itself, I love it. Plenty of room, good power (we have the base V6,) good gas mileage (avg. 25 mpg highway,) SYNC is super easy to use, the leather seats are comfortable, the navigation is simple, and we've had no issues after a year.
