Here is a final season review of the USC defense under CP

LINK

2013 USC stats

avg points allowed per game-21.2
passing yards per game-214.6
rushing yards per game-120.6
total yards per game-335.2
sotal sacks-35
total int-17
total fumble rec-5

2014 LSU stats:

avg points allowed per game-17.5
passing yards per game-162.3
rushing yards per game--143.5
total yards per game-305.8
total sacks-19
total int-10
total fumble rec-10

the lsu defense gave up less points this year than usc did in 2013. that's obviously the most important stastic. it seems that CP specializes in stopping the run and pressuring the QB. USC showed trouble sometimes in pass coverage, but LSU seems to have more experience and talent in the secondary than USC had. thought these were interesting figures.

the overall picture i am trying to create is think about what he can do with all the talent that lsu has to offer. his 2013 D was almost on par with our this past season.

USC has its issues. Wasn't it on the tail end of a huge amount of sanctions?

Well usc also plays in a conference with stacked offenses and had limited scholarships. Lsu plays in a defensive conference and has been a beast for 14 years

Not apples to apples. He took the USC defense from 7th to 1st in one year. A USC team with limited scholarships.

He has a great history at stopping the spread. You don't become an NFL defensive coordinator without major skills. Supposedly a film junkie.

Seems like a homerun with him and O. O brings the recruiting and CP brings the coaching/strategy.

Eta- do the right thing Les. If Alleva makes this a money issue, force his hand or give up some salary. Ask Gerry what the right DC hire means in pivotal years

The biggest statistic is that his defenses focus on getting sacks and creating turnovers. When LSU can get short fields and stops via turnovers we have 2011 type years.

Wasn't that team hit hard by the NCAA sanctions on top of being a dumpster fire started by monte kiffin? If so, seems like a pretty good job on his part.

He had to come in and install a new system (must be easy enough to grasp), USC was on sanctions, HC got fired midway through the season, and they play much better pass offenses as well. So much adversity to finish out as good as they did.

Top 50 pass offenses in 2013 USC played

1st, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 19th, 21st, 39th, 44th, 47th

Top 50 pass offenses in 2014 LSU played

12th, 19th, 23rd, 25th (ULM), 29th, 38th

So going by that, he did a ridiculously good job. That team brought back 8 starters on defense this year, and have fallen hard.
