Alaska Air has a daily Non-Stop to/from MSY-SEA, so this is no longer true.
MSY-SEA (4 hours non-stop)
SEA-YVR (Vancouver) 40 minute commuter plane
Rental Car or Van from YVR to Whistler (2 hour drive, great road now)
PROFIT
Colorado and Utah reorts are nice too, direct flights from MSY to SLC and DIA

That's a lot more difficult to get to than say, Breckenridge or Park City.
But not THAT much more difficult than Tahoe, which can kind of be a pain in the arse.
