re: did anyone else hear the Bengals do a "who dey" chant last night?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not but I don't think we did. I was arguing with Bengal fans on reddit last night and one linked this New York Times article. among other things it says:

"...(who dey) had been made popular by 1981 in Bengals fans’ cheers for their team during their run to Super Bowl XVI ... The phrase was widely used by Bengals fans in 1981. The phrase was widely used by Saints fans in 1983."

that means the Bengals started it somewhere between September of '81 and January 24, 1982. let's just say it was September.

that article also links another article saying the Saints might have gotten it from LSU football who used it in 1982. This still puts the Bengals one year ahead.

what it fails to mention is that LSU basketball used it during the 1980-81 season, as you can hear in this absolutely horrifying song

LSU made the Final Four that season, this incessant fricking song was everywhere, and it can't be from any later than March of '81 because it mentions players like Rudy Macklin, Ethan Martin, and Greg Cook, who were all seniors.

its also worth noting that LSU played Xavier (which is in Cincinnati) that season, on December 22, 1980.

if nothing else, Louisiana is ahead by at least 6 months on this, and it seems more likely that Saints fans got it from LSU basketball in '80-81 than Cincinnati years later.

so maybe Bengals fans heard it during the Xavier game, or maybe during the Final Four, but both seem more likely than them independently making up a nearly identical phrase just a few months after LSU did.
