Step 1- Convert Roster Bonuses into Signing Bonuses

why arent these just signing bonuses to begin with? whats the point of putting that money on the cap if you can avoid it?

My guess is that the roster bonuses are not part of the guaranteed $ in the original deal.

Easy answer. If they are signing bonuses to begin with they are guaranteed when they sign. Having them as roster bonuses and converting them protects us from injury and/or poor play.

Let's say Byrd looks like he won't heal. If we had given him $6 mil more signing bonus up front then that is gone(dead money). If we cut him because he can't play, we save the $6 mil.

That's a big reason we are giving Galette a huge roster bonus. Had he sucked or gotten seriously injured this year, we could save $12.5 mil.

Edit:
Double ninja-ed.
