This. This right here is what I'm talking about. Pure and utter ridiculousness. The decline in participation is not about Joel Osteen. It's about you trying to tell me my gay friend is on par with a serial child rapist and murderer in the eyes of your god.

Based on the laws of the God who you just said created such laws to show people they need Him.
Circular logic is circular
You can either believe it or not, but I'm pretty sure you don't.

Right, he could have lumped homosexuals with those who look at women with lust. Or masturbators. But he chose to lump them in with criminals.
Hmmm, wonder why?

From reading your posts the past few days, it's safe to assume I don't believe in your god. Truth is, somedays I think there probably is some sort of Creator. Other days I really don't care.
I consider myself a half-assed agnostic Deist

People are leaving the faith because it doesn't offer anything of value. The message is not about Jesus Christ saving people from their sin; it's about how people are basically good people who should just love themselves because God loves them just the way they are. If that's true, why does it matter if you go to church or read your Bible or obey any of those laws? What such a message does is ultimately turn people into Deists, which is what you find today where so many people believe in God but fewer and fewer people go to church.
It's certainly not a condemnation of homosexuality that is the problem, since homosexuality has been condemned for 2,000 years in the Church, and even longer than that in Judaism.

Except for the Catholic priests who were raping boys, as though that were okay. And the Catholic Church covering that up.

Yeah, I went to Catholic school so I'm well aware of that punitive, you're inherently bad and need God's forgiveness dogma, but I don't really believe it.
I'm a pretty decent dude and try to go right by people. I figure if I try to leave the world a better place than I found it, I'll be OK when my time comes. I don't need all the fire and brimstone to compel me to believe.

My comments are more in-line with what most Christians believed prior to the 20th century when the Gospel started getting watered down and the faith became more about making new converts than teaching the ones who were already there.

And that is all fine and dandy and certainly your right to believe however you wish, but I can hope you understand why I don't want to base public policy in the 21st century on what you just admitted was 19th century religious dogma.

quote:Like I said, everyone sins, including priests and the Pope (I'm not a Roman Catholic). But even then, homosexuality has always been condemned by the Church, even while it may have been practiced by individuals in positions of power or authority within the Church. Christians are just as sinful as non-Christians. The only difference is that a true Christian will repent of their sins and ask forgiveness from God for what they do.

That is the way it is. The murderer is in line with the liar, the thief, the cheat, all those things that are to cause separation from God are sin. Sorry if it does not meet your expectations of life and God. God does hope you change your mind though.

But there is a lot of good application to be had from what I believe. Unfortunately a few issues (abortion and homosexuality) trump all else when it comes to those who disagree with what I believe, so the whole baby is thrown out with the bath water.

In God's eyes, if you sin once, you've broken the entire law. A sin can range from lying to getting wasted to killing someone in a fit of anger. In that sense, they are all equal. But like I said, the severity of the different kinds of sins is different from a practical perspective.
Or I could put it this way: homosexuality is a sin and so is murder. Don't commit either and you won't have to repent of either.

No the problem with what you believe is you believe that someone can only be a good person if they are a Christian...which rather lives out about 3 or 4 billion people in the world.
