Hockey is definitely a violent sport, but IMO is less violent than football. Football has collisions on every play, they are far less common in hockey.
Also, hockey is just a much less popular sport so it gets less coverage. In 2013, 46 of the 50 most-watches sporting events were NFL games and one was the college fb national championship. So only 3 of the top 50 were non-football, and zero were hockey. Even when you look at the top 50 non-NFL broadcasts, only one is NHL.

Never argue toughness and violence in a sport with a hockey fan. Personally, collisions in football appear to be more violent and occur more often. Kickoff returns are the worst IMO>
