No, sticking to the book would've been terrible. Would've felt more like a Narnia movie.

The first 2 Narnia's were great. The third was terrible.
But I agree regarding the Hobbit. All of the action with Gandalf occurs off-screen in the book. There is no characterization of individual dwarves in the book outside of Thorin. The movie was far more epic than the book.
